Thriving Families, Safer Children Kentucky is a collaboration of statewide partners that work alongside people with lived experience to rethink child welfare by creating conditions for strong, healthy communities where families are supported and children are free from harm.

All families deserve the opportunity to raise their children safely and successfully in their own homes. We know that moving from a reactive child protection system to proactive support for overall child and family wellbeing can prevent child maltreatment and unnecessary family separation. By elevating the voices of parents and youth with lived experience in child welfare, we can develop a more just and equitable system.

The following priorities align with the overarching values and goals of the national movement focused on the promotion of family and community wellbeing:

  • Development of a robust network of community-based prevention supports

  • Creation of formalized structures to serve families “screened out” by the Kentucky Department for Community Based Services

  • Clearly differentiating poverty and neglect

  • Development of a statewide collaborative primary/secondary prevention plan

  • Creation of a Parent Advisory Council

  • Statewide Prevention Collaborative

  • Regional Prevention Collaboratives

  • KY SEAT (Kentucky System Experience At the Table)

  • Lean on Me KY

  • Building Community Wellbeing Among Families Project

  • Truth and Reconciliation: Truth Telling Circles
