Lessons Learned from a Graduation for Youth in Foster Care – Part 2

Last week, I referenced a rather magical and unique event that happened in early June for foster care youth graduating from residential agencies in the Louisville area.  Sponsored by True Up, Benchmark, Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth, Kentucky Safe, and the Department for Community Based Services, the ceremony was animated by real attention to these young people – their needs; their goals; and, their futures.  As referenced in last week’s blog, I celebrated the quality and student-centric nature of the event, but [...]

Children with access to recreational facilities close to home have shown to be more physically active and have lower obesity rates than those without access. A “shared use” policy can be a formal agreement between two entities, typically a school and another agency such as a city government or a YMCA, to share [...]

Recently, Governor Beshear said that he might delay restoring child care assistance until August or even later. The legislature approved funding to restore assistance beginning July 1. The Facts Keep Coming: Early Childhood Education Needs to be a Priority

Research continues to show long-lasting positive impacts, like increased educational attainment, higher earnings potential and reductions in crime, for children who receive high quality early childhood education. A recently released study further builds the case for quality early learning opportunities for all children. The Abecedarian Project, a long term study on health and early education, found that people who participated in an early education program which included education, meals, and medical care such as screenings and check-ups had better health outcomes thirty years later in life than those who did not participate in the program. [...]

At a conference recently, I saw a video produced by the Monroe County Youth Prevention Council on secondhand smoke. The research shows us that secondhand smoke has serious health consequences for people exposed to it, especially pregnant women and children [...]
