The Voice of a Youth in Foster Care

Though National Foster Care Month has ended, it is important to remember that we each can play a part in enhancing the lives of children and youth in foster care beyond the month of May. Children and youth in the foster care system often face challenges emotionally, socially, physically, and educationally. It is important that we hear from those most impacted by foster care -- the youth. Read the reflections of one youth in foster care below. Abby's* resiliency and hope shines through her [...]

Thank You for Choosing Kentucky Kids

Kentucky Gives Day is a fundraising event that connects Kentuckians to the causes they care about, and yesterday, many of you chose kids. Kids across the Commonwealth count on Kentucky Youth Advocates to be their voice in Frankfort, and your gifts make that a reality. As a bipartisan, independent organization, we take no government money; we rely on donors to help us remain independent. Your gifts help us: Make trips to Frankfort to meet with [...]

Kinship Caregivers Need Support, Too

May is National Foster Care Month, but it's only fitting to recognize the grandparents and other relatives who are raising children in Kentucky. Kinship care is often a safe alternative to foster care for children who cannot remain safely with their parents, as research shows that they are better off with family. We also know that kinship care poses lots of financial, emotional, and legal challenges for caregivers. All children deserve a safe and nurturing place [...]

Using Data to Drive Change

We know that what gets measured gets changed. In this past weekend's Forum in the Courier-Journal, readers were able to hear various community members' perspectives about issues impacting children and how data can be a driver for change. We thank the Greater Louisville Project and the Courier-Journal for recognizing the role data plays in bettering outcomes for children in Louisville and across Kentucky. The Forum featured six op-eds focused on the safety, health, justice, economic security, and education of children [...]

New Online Voter Registration Makes It Easier to be a Voice for Kids

Kentucky kids are counting on you to vote on their behalf, and a new online system will make that even easier. Kentuckians are now able to register to vote at home, at the local library, or on a school computer. As part of the effort to increase voter participation, Kentuckians of age to vote can now register to vote or update their registration using the state’s online portal, GoVoteKY.com. To register, a person must enter [...]

Kicking Off April as Child Abuse Prevention Month

What better way is there to kick off Child Abuse Prevention Month than to rally behind preventing and ending child abuse with state and local leaders and advocates? Yesterday, Kentucky Youth Advocates joined Family & Children’s Place and the Kosair Charities Face It® Movement at the foot of the Big Four Bridge in Louisville at the annual Rally to End Child Abuse. We applaud Family & Children’s Place for hosting the annual event that welcomed [...]

Rally to End Child Abuse March 30th

Join the Face It ® Movement, Family & Children’s Place, Kentucky Youth Advocates, and many other local child-serving organizations at Louisville's Big Four Bridge on March 30th to kick off Child Abuse Prevention Month. In 2014, nearly 23,000 children were confirmed as victims of physical or sexual abuse or neglect in Kentucky. In Jefferson County, that number totaled more than 3,000 children. One child is one too many, and abuse can have a lifelong impact in emotional and physical health, [...]

A Second Chance Means More Opportunities

I think all of us can agree that at some point in our youth we made a stupid mistake. For some youth, the mistake (like sneaking in to an abandoned building to smoke cigarettes with friends) led to a juvenile charge. These charges often impact youth as adults because their juvenile record stays with them, even if they get back on track after messing up as a young person. What we’re doing now isn’t working [...]

Six Things to Know About SB 194

Kentucky kids deserve a safe environment to learn and grow. This session, legislators have the opportunity to strengthen the safety of children at public schools by passing SB 194. Below are the top six things you need to know about SB 194. The bill would require a background check for substantiated child abuse and neglect for all public school employees. While schools are required to conduct criminal background checks, they don’t know about cases where [...]
