New KET Production Examines Raising Emotionally Healthy Children

We all want our children to grow up to be happy, secure, healthy adults. But how much do we know about how that actually happens? Research on brain development shows that positive early experiences are critical for long term mental and physical health. When young children do not receive proper nurturing, or they experience trauma or constant stress, it can have serious repercussions for their development. Dr. Terry Brooks appears in a new KET Special Report, Safe and [...]

Statement by Terry Brooks, executive director, on Funding for Child Care in the Final Proposed Budget

Contact: Andrea Bennett abennett@kyyouth.org 502-381-1176 Jeffersontown, KY - Budgets are about tough choices. And the good news is that the final budget proposed by the House and Senate places a priority on Kentucky's kids in  many ways. While there are several key kid components to applaud, we especially want to underscore the progress made in restoring funding for the Child Care Assistance Program. Do we wish that full restoration of the program, which was cut last year, [...]

Statement by Terry Brooks, executive director, on House Protecting Investments in Kids in House Budget

Contact: Andrea Bennett abennett@kyyouth.org 502-381-1176 Today, we applaud the Kentucky House for passing a budget that is a win for kids. The House budget protects several investments for kids that were originally proposed in Governor Beshear's budget. Of upmost priority is the funding protected in the House budget to restore the Child Care Assistance Program to 150% of the federal poverty level. This funding will help stop the detrimental effects that are occurring as a [...]

Specifically, this bill emphasizes investing limited state dollars in community-based programs that are more effective at getting youth back on track. It also makes great strides towards reserving costly incarceration and other placements out [...]

The Tide has Turned on a Statewide, Smoke-Free Law

The tide seems to have finally turned on passing a statewide, comprehensive smoke-free law in Kentucky.  A recent Kentucky Health Issues Poll revealed that 65% of Kentuckians support a statewide smoke-free law. Leadership by Representative Susan Westrom (D) and Representative Julie Raque-Adams (R) in the House and Senator Julie Denton (R) in the Senate demonstrates that legislators on both sides of the aisle recognize the need to address this important issue. And more and more [...]

WDRB Guest Editorial by Terry Brooks – Support Child Care

This video was originally a WDRB guest point of view. You can view it online here. Last April 1st, when faced with tough budget decisions, Gov. Beshear announced cuts to child care assistance that allowed working moms and dads to enroll their little ones in quality child care. Those supports helped parents make ends meet while working low-wage jobs. Without this assistance, parents face a hard decision: to spend nearly all of their hard-earned wages [...]
