Oral health is an integral part of overall health. Kentucky has the third highest toothlessness rate in the nation among older adults with vast oral health problems facing all ages of Kentuckians. Poor oral health stems from multiple factors including lack of access to care, lack of importance placed on oral health, lack of oral health knowledge, lack of money to pay for care, and many others.
Kentucky Youth Advocates staffs the statewide Kentucky Oral Health Coalition, a group of dental providers, public health professionals, advocates, educators, and others working together to improve the oral health of all people in Kentucky. This coalition is currently working to increase oral health literacy; increase school based oral health care; and increase the number of dentists accepting Medicaid.
