Statement by Dr. Terry Brooks, executive director of Kentucky Youth Advocates

Many children across the Commonwealth spend a majority of their day in early childhood programs and those environments should focus on nurturing healthy development and learning. Today, the Kentucky House emphasized their support of that idea by passing Senate Bill 45, sponsored by Senator Danny Carroll, which seeks to strengthen licensed child care center standards on healthy eating and drinking, active playtime, and limited screen time. Consistent implementation of these important standards will ensure every child in these early care and education programs have the building blocks for a healthier life.

We applaud the Kentucky House for supporting SB 45 today and thank Senator Carroll for championing the measure and Representative Melinda Gibbons Prunty for championing it on the Kentucky House floor. We now look to Governor Andy Beshear to sign SB 45 into law so that all children in licensed child care programs can grow up healthy and ready to learn.
