In the 1990s, groundbreaking research through the Landmark Study of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) opened our eyes to the profound impact early negative experiences have on lifelong health, well-being, and social outcomes. For many, these findings were a wake-up call—showing that childhood adversity could contribute to a cycle of trauma that could echo through generations.

But with greater understanding came a hopeful message: adversity is a fact, but it is not fate.

Fast forward to today, and we now know that positive childhood experiences (PCEs) can serve as a powerful buffer against the effects of adversity

Through continued research, particularly around the 7 key PCEs, we’ve learned how intentionally fostering these experiences can play a transformative role in breaking cycles of trauma and building resilience.

Bloom Kentucky is focused on driving statewide policy change to prevent and mitigate the impact of childhood adversity. We are dedicated to empowering families, schools, communities, and policymakers to recognize the transformative power of positive childhood experiences and take meaningful steps to support children across the Commonwealth. Through our campaign, we will highlight each of the 7 PCEs and offer actionable strategies to integrate them into everyday life, helping to build a stronger, more resilient future for Kentucky’s youth.

The 7 Positive Childhood Experiences (PCEs):

  1. The ability to talk with family about feelings.
  2. The sense that family is supportive during difficult times.
  3. The enjoyment of participation in community traditions.
  4. Feeling a sense of belonging in high school.
  5. Feeling supported by friends.
  6. Having at least two non-parent adults who genuinely cared.
  7. Feeling safe and protected by an adult in the home.

How You Can Help Foster These Experiences

Over the coming months, Bloom Kentucky will highlight how each of these PCEs can be integrated into daily life. Whether you’re a parent, educator, community member, or mentor, there are simple yet powerful steps you can take to encourage these experiences. From creating safe spaces for conversations to actively participating in community events, everyone has a role in cultivating positive experiences for Kentucky’s youth.

Our goal is to empower you to be intentional about creating environments where children feel supported, safe, and valued. Together, we can help ensure that the future of Kentucky is built on strong, resilient foundations of positivity, connection, and care.

Let’s work hand-in-hand to show that while adversity may be part of life, positive experiences can be the driving force for change and healing.

Stay tuned as we dive deeper into each of the 7 PCEs and provide the tools you need to support the children in your life. With a focus on fostering positive childhood experiences, we can build a brighter, more resilient Kentucky for all.
