New County-Level Data on Childhood Deaths Posted to the KIDS COUNT Data Center

New childhood mortality data has been posted to the KIDS COUNT Data Center for infants (less than one year old), children (ages 1-14) and teens (ages 15-19). Kentucky’s infant death rate has remained stable at 7 per 1,000 live births for approximately 15 years now, continuing to closely mirror the national rate. The state child death rate, however, has fallen over the past two decades, from 33 per 100,000 children ages 1-14 during 1990-1992 to [...]

A Letter to Governor Steve Beshear on Behalf of Kids in Kentucky

Dear Governor Beshear, Congratulations on your re-election on November 8.  Your impressive share of the vote brings to mind that axiom from the astute political observer, Charlie Brown, who opined, “A great potential is the heaviest burden to bear.”  That is so apropos to your second term. Let’s be honest – history is not kind to chief executives whether their second terms are at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue or in the Kentucky’s Governor Mansion.  All too [...]

Vote for Kids, Kentucky!

Children can’t vote or contribute to campaigns, but the issues that impact their lives will be decided by the choices we make this coming Tuesday when we head to the polls. Right now, children in Kentucky face a mountain of challenges: Kentucky leads the nation in the number of child deaths from abuse and neglect, places 6th in child poverty, and places 3rd in child obesity. Over the past three weeks we have used this [...]

Preventing Child Deaths Due to Abuse and Neglect

In recent months, we have been inundated with news about child abuse tragedies. Several high profile cases made national headlines including the Casey Anthony trial, the Marchella Pierce case in New York City, and the gruesome story of Nubia Barahona in Florida that detailed serious injuries inflicted on the child’s twin brother. Unfortunately, the list goes on. Multiple cases in Kentucky have landed on major newspapers as well. In the United States, a child is [...]

They Deserve a Second Look

By: Elizabeth Young As an intern at Kentucky Youth Advocates I am new to advocating for policy change. My experience with the juvenile justice system comes from my work with children charged with status offenses. From that vantage point, I can tell you what actual cases look like when children are charged for misbehaviors like skipping school, ignoring rules, or running away from home. There are children charged with truancy because an overworked parent was [...]

Time to True Up

Until a couple weeks ago, I had never heard of the verb “True Up.” At a recent event in downtown Louisville, a distinguished-looking gentleman named Frank Harshaw defined it as, “to make level; to square; to bring into correct balance.”  This soft-spoken guy is a highly successful local business leader, who owns a Trane air conditioning firm. But it was neither air conditioning mechanics nor his business’ bottom line that Frank wanted to “True Up.” [...]

The annual publication uses the best available data on ten key indicators to gauge the educational, social, economic, and physical well-being of children in each state. Hold Kids Harmless: Sign-On Letter to President and Congressional Leadership

Kentucky Youth Advocates recently signed on to the following letter from the First Focus Campaign for Children, asking President Obama and Congressional Leadership to keep children safe when finalizing a deal to raise the debt ceiling. Simply put, cuts to the children’s budget hurts kids, and only makes a dent in the deficit.  We are looking for Kentucky organizations who are also interested in adding their name to the letter! Dear Mr. President and Congressional [...]
