New Kentucky Medicaid Managed Care Story Bank Hotline

Do you have a personal or organizational story about Kentucky’s new “Medicaid managed care” system? In November 2011, Kentucky Medicaid changed the way it operates its Medicaid program by expanding managed care coverage to all areas of the state. Medicaid contracted with three new managed care organizations (MCOs) to coordinate health care for most Medicaid members. The new MCOs are: CoventryCares of Kentucky, Kentucky Spirit Health Plan and WellCare of Kentucky. This change did not [...]

Today is National Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day – Help Kentucky Families Increase their Income and Improve their Health

As someone who passionately works to improve the health of children, I always have to remind myself that health does not exist in a vacuum. If Jonny’s family does not have enough money to fix their car or if his parents do not have stable income, it may be difficult for Jonny’s parents to take him to the doctor. Yet Jonny’s story is not unique. In fact, one in four children in the Commonwealth lives [...]

A 2011 Kentucky KIDS COUNT County Data Book Highlight: Smoking During Pregnancy

Children fare best when they have a healthy start in life, and this opportunity begins during pregnancy. But many healthy starts are compromised in Kentucky due to mothers smoking during pregnancy. During the 2007-2009 period, 25 percent of all births were to mothers who smoked at some point during pregnancy. Kentucky’s rate of smoking during pregnancy – the highest in the nation – is particularly troubling given the serious consequences on children’s health. The U.S. [...]

A Note to the Governor on the State of the Commonwealth Address

Wednesday night was a promising one for Kentucky’s children. In fact, this may be the first time in a long time that children were a genuine priority in a Commonwealth Address.  Governor Beshear articulated the reality that children’s health and education and safety all impinge on one another.  Leaders simply cannot silo improvement for Kentucky’s children and a holistic campaign for kids is replete with potential.  Especially important was the commitment spotlighted around the child [...]

It’s Time to Put Away the Paddle

Today, Kentucky Youth Advocates released a new issue brief, “Ending Corporal Punishment in Kentucky Public Schools.” Kentucky is one of 19 states that still permit the use of corporal punishment in public schools. The issue brief highlights the negative consequences corporal punishment has on students, the disproportionate use with certain student populations, and alternative approaches to school discipine that are more effective and can improve outcomes for all children. In Kentucky, local boards of education [...]

Give a Gift for Kentucky’s Kids Today

Dear Friend, Children rely on decisions adults make to grow up healthy and strong. They rely on their parents/guardians to provide clothes for their back, a safe home and reliable meals. Also, they rely on policymakers to make sure they are protected from abuse and neglect, to make sure their parents can get health insurance to take them to the doctor, and to make sure their misbehaviors like running away are handled with effective discipline [...]

Access to Oral Health in Kentucky and the United States

By: Jim Cecil, DMD, MPH Oral health is intimately associated with overall health! By extension, oral diseases, infections and conditions are associated with systemic conditions and diseases. Recent reports indicate that oral infections are associated with diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, obesity, stroke, adverse birth outcomes, and other common and chronic systemic diseases. Given these significant associations, I believe this represents a clarion call for integration of the health care delivery [...]

House TANF Bill Snubs Kids in Poverty – Again

few months ago in Washington, Congress passed a temporary reauthorization of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) block-grant program in order to prevent it from completely running out. TANF provides cash assistance to families with children that are unable to meet basic needs, while requiring work activities of parents to move families toward self-sufficiency. We were relieved by that temporary reauthorization, but hoped TANF would be improved to better meet the needs of children [...]
