The Tide has Turned on a Statewide, Smoke-Free Law

The tide seems to have finally turned on passing a statewide, comprehensive smoke-free law in Kentucky.  A recent Kentucky Health Issues Poll revealed that 65% of Kentuckians support a statewide smoke-free law. Leadership by Representative Susan Westrom (D) and Representative Julie Raque-Adams (R) in the House and Senator Julie Denton (R) in the Senate demonstrates that legislators on both sides of the aisle recognize the need to address this important issue. And more and more [...]

KIDS COUNT Data Point of the Month: Median Family Income

All Kentucky children should have a chance at success, but many face obstacles that make their journey more difficult. Many families do not make enough money to fulfill their children’s basic needs, such as shelter, food, and health care. Kentucky’s rate of child poverty is staggeringly high, but hides the fact that many families living above the federal poverty level still struggle to make ends meet. Families with incomes above the poverty line may be [...]

“Back to the Future” to Help Us Move Forward in Education

I do not go to the movies to answer life’s questions.  Instead, I prefer the excitement of an espionage talk or the laughs from a comedy. Maybe that is why I enjoyed watching “Back to the Future” with my oldest grandkids last weekend. The 1985 adventures of Marty McFly racing back into the 50’s do not cause deep soul searching, but it did prompt a “cerebral itch.” As part of the Annie E. Casey Foundation [...]

WDRB Guest Editorial by Terry Brooks – Support Child Care

This video was originally a WDRB guest point of view. You can view it online here. Last April 1st, when faced with tough budget decisions, Gov. Beshear announced cuts to child care assistance that allowed working moms and dads to enroll their little ones in quality child care. Those supports helped parents make ends meet while working low-wage jobs. Without this assistance, parents face a hard decision: to spend nearly all of their hard-earned wages [...]

Thanks Governor Beshear for stepping up for kids in your budget

Budgets always require tough choices, and on Tuesday, Governor Beshear built on his previous commitment to kids around health and high school graduation and became “the Children’s Governor” because of the choices he made, the priorities he established, and the values he exemplified. In what is arguably the most historic budget address for kids in the Commonwealth in decades, Governor Beshear laid out an agenda that is as smart as it is bold.  He tackled [...]

Dollars and Common Sense: Investments in Our Youngest Citizens Yield the Most Return

The first eight years of life are the most critical in building a strong foundation for lifetime success. Early childhood experiences play a major role in influencing a person’s educational performance and attainment, how much a person earns throughout life and even health risks and life expectancy. These experiences include: prenatal care, strong parent-child interactions, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), quality early care and education, family economic security, health care, and developmental screenings. The strength of [...]
