New Kentucky Medicaid Managed Care Story Bank Hotline

Do you have a personal or organizational story about Kentucky’s new “Medicaid managed care” system? In November 2011, Kentucky Medicaid changed the way it operates its Medicaid program by expanding managed care coverage to all areas of the state. Medicaid contracted with three new managed care organizations (MCOs) to coordinate health care for most Medicaid members. The new MCOs are: CoventryCares of Kentucky, Kentucky Spirit Health Plan and WellCare of Kentucky. This change did not [...]

Today is National Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day – Help Kentucky Families Increase their Income and Improve their Health

As someone who passionately works to improve the health of children, I always have to remind myself that health does not exist in a vacuum. If Jonny’s family does not have enough money to fix their car or if his parents do not have stable income, it may be difficult for Jonny’s parents to take him to the doctor. Yet Jonny’s story is not unique. In fact, one in four children in the Commonwealth lives [...]

A 2011 Kentucky KIDS COUNT County Data Book Highlight: Smoking During Pregnancy

Children fare best when they have a healthy start in life, and this opportunity begins during pregnancy. But many healthy starts are compromised in Kentucky due to mothers smoking during pregnancy. During the 2007-2009 period, 25 percent of all births were to mothers who smoked at some point during pregnancy. Kentucky’s rate of smoking during pregnancy – the highest in the nation – is particularly troubling given the serious consequences on children’s health. The U.S. [...]

A Note to the Governor on the State of the Commonwealth Address

Wednesday night was a promising one for Kentucky’s children. In fact, this may be the first time in a long time that children were a genuine priority in a Commonwealth Address.  Governor Beshear articulated the reality that children’s health and education and safety all impinge on one another.  Leaders simply cannot silo improvement for Kentucky’s children and a holistic campaign for kids is replete with potential.  Especially important was the commitment spotlighted around the child [...]

Access to Oral Health in Kentucky and the United States

By: Jim Cecil, DMD, MPH Oral health is intimately associated with overall health! By extension, oral diseases, infections and conditions are associated with systemic conditions and diseases. Recent reports indicate that oral infections are associated with diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, cardiovascular disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, obesity, stroke, adverse birth outcomes, and other common and chronic systemic diseases. Given these significant associations, I believe this represents a clarion call for integration of the health care delivery [...]

Kentucky Continues to Provide Health Insurance to Children at a Higher Rate than the National Average

Kentucky continues to cover children with health insurance at a rate well above the national average, according to a new report authored by the Georgetown University Health Policy Institute’s Center for Children and Families and released by Kentucky Youth Advocates, the Kentucky Equal Justice Center, Kentucky Voices for Health, and Covering Kentucky Kids and Families. Kentucky’s rate of uninsured kids was measured at 6.0% in 2010, not statistically different from the measured rate of 6.5% [...]

Kentucky KIDS COUNT 2011 County Data Book Measures Children’s Health

The 2011 County Data Book, released today by Kentucky Youth Advocates finds that Kentucky has made progress in ensuring low-income children receive dental services, yet much work remains to improve children’s oral health in the state. This is the 21st annual release of the County Data Book, part of the Kentucky KIDS COUNT project. New Measure of Poverty Shows Benefits of Tax Credits

Last week, the Census Bureau released findings from the Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM). Unlike the official federal poverty measure, covered in KYA’s earlier releases, the Supplemental Poverty Measure (SPM) is designed to act as a more comprehensive gauge of poverty. The official federal poverty measure has been based on an old assumption about a family’s basic needs which no longer holds true in today’s society – that the average family spends one-third of its income [...]

A Letter to Governor Steve Beshear on Behalf of Kids in Kentucky

Dear Governor Beshear, Congratulations on your re-election on November 8.  Your impressive share of the vote brings to mind that axiom from the astute political observer, Charlie Brown, who opined, “A great potential is the heaviest burden to bear.”  That is so apropos to your second term. Let’s be honest – history is not kind to chief executives whether their second terms are at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue or in the Kentucky’s Governor Mansion.  All too [...]
