This year, as lawmakers begin their work in Frankfort, we’re preparing to show up with urgency, purpose, and a shared commitment to putting Kentucky kids first.
Children’s Advocacy Week, coming up March 2nd – 6th, offers a powerful opportunity for advocates to rally together, connect directly with legislators, and ensure children and families remain a top priority throughout the session.
To make the most of the week, we have included some updates and tips for advocates to make this year the most impactful one yet.
Big Changes in Frankfort
There are several changes this year in Frankfort that will impact advocacy efforts, most notably being the current construction efforts underway at the State Capitol building:
- The Capitol building is closed to the public – which means no big rally in the Rotunda
- House and Senate Chambers are closed to public viewing
- State offices, including the Governor’s Office and Supreme Court, are operating off site
- Parking is more limited around the State Capitol
For additional context on the changes happening in Frankfort this session, this article from the Kentucky Lantern provides a helpful overview.
While these changes shift how we advocate, they do not change why we advocate. Children’s Advocacy Day remains a critical opportunity to elevate the voices of kids, families, and communities across the Commonwealth and your participation matters more than ever.
Prep Work
- Now is the time to schedule an in-person or virtual meeting with your state Senator and Representative. Meeting directly with your elected officials is one of the most effective ways to influence change. Legislators’ schedules are filling up quickly, so if you haven’t already, now is the time to request your meetings for Children’s Advocacy Week.

And throughout the week, here are four ways you can get involved:
- Meet with your state legislators (virtually or in-person) to elevate issues impacting kids that you care about – whether you attend with colleagues, youth, community partners, or on your own, your story and perspective matter. These conversations help lawmakers understand how their decisions impact real children and families in their districts.
- Attend or tune in to a committee meeting to see the General Assembly in action.
- Call or email your state Senator and Representative to urge them to vote YES on bills that are good for kids.
- Engage with Kentucky Youth Advocates on social media!
