Calling All Photos of Kentucky Kids

Kentucky Youth Advocates is looking for photos of Kentucky kids to include in the 2014 Kentucky KIDS COUNT County Data Book and other Kentucky Youth Advocates publications. We know you all proudly share pictures of your kids and grandkids by carrying them in your wallet, on Instagram and on Facebook. Here’s a great chance to promote those great kids through Kentucky Youth Advocates’ materials. We need your photos by May 31 so please start sending them in. In order to use the photos, we [...]

Kentucky Kids the Winners in Session

This post originally appeared as an Op-Ed in The Courier Journal. You can view it online here.  Spring in Kentucky is animated by certain rituals. As the first Saturday in May approaches each year, we become experts on horses. Students begin to wonder about final report card grades. And the governor and General Assembly are graded as well. I recently was on KET's "Kentucky Tonight" and heard my fellow panelists give tough grades to the [...]

Kentucky is on the Right Track with Reforms in Justice Systems

PBS’ Frontline featured Kentucky in a show, Prison State, earlier this week. The reason for the attention came from both a sore spot and a source of pride. On the one hand it came because of “Kentucky uglies” – heavy use of incarceration for adults and jailing kids for things like skipping school. On the other hand national interest was spurred by the work undertaken in Kentucky to set us on a better path in the adult system with reforms championed by Representative John Tilley [...]

Children Won in the 2014 KY General Assembly

The 2014 Kentucky General Assembly wrapped up late last night. The day after, a review of the action taken by legislators in Frankfort this year shows major accomplishments for Kentucky children. Thank you to the many bill sponsors, leaders on budget issues, Governor Beshear, President Stivers, Speaker Stumbo, other members of House and Senate leadership, and all legislators that helped make these accomplishments possible! What do these wins mean? SB 176, sponsored by Senator Denise [...]

If you missed KY Gives Day – You can still Make a Difference

Yesterday, April 9, was KY Gives Day. It was a day when people stepped up to invest in non-profits all across the Commonwealth, and we thank everyone who gave to Kentucky Youth Advocates (KYA) yesterday. If you missed KY Gives Day, you can still make a donation to KYA today or any day at https://kyyouth.org/donate/. Children often don’t have a voice in decisions made by our policymakers, and your support will help make sure Kentucky Youth Advocates can continue [...]

Together, We Can Make Kentucky a Better State to be a Kid

By: Rebecca Ghent, 2013-2014 KYA Intern Every child in this state should have a chance to succeed.  A lot of people are committed to making that idea a reality.  As a social work student, I have had the opportunity to see the varied efforts of many people hard at work.  I have seen it in people working in schools, in lawyers working with refugees and immigrants, and now at Kentucky Youth Advocates.  I have met [...]

On the Homestretch for Legislative Wins

We are currently in the homestretch of this year’s legislative session, and as Kentuckians that prioritize speaking up for our most vulnerable citizens, we already have some reasons to celebrate as well as reasons to remain hopeful that the session will result in important wins for kids. An important win for some of our youngest Kentuckians came in the form of the passage of House Bill 157. This bill requires training on the recognition and [...]

Reforming Juvenile Justice Will Help Protect Public Safety

The bill to reform juvenile justice in Kentucky, SB 200, passed the Senate last week and is being considered in the House this week.  It would allow Kentucky to use taxpayer dollars more wisely to produce better outcomes for children, families, and communities. The bill is grounded in the work of the Kentucky Unified Juvenile Justice Taskforce, co-chaired by Senator Whitney Westerfield and Representative John Tilley. The Taskforce found that Kentucky spends too many dollars [...]
