Kids Are Cheering! Blueprint for Kentucky’s Children Bills Are Off to the Governor

While this year’s Kentucky General Assembly isn’t quite over because a couple of days remain for final concurrence between the two chambers, Kentucky kids can already cheer for big Blueprint for Kentucky’s Children legislative wins! Three Blueprint legislative priorities—SB 195, SB 236, and HB 180—are on their way to the Governor’s desk. One final legislative priority—SB 120—has passed both chambers, and we expect that it will get through its final concurrence and be on its [...]

Getting the Most out of the KIDS COUNT Data Center

Our annual County Data Book has quite a bit of county level data on how kids are faring across Kentucky’s counties, yet it represents a small fraction of the approximately 100 indicators we have posted to the KIDS COUNT Data Center. If you’re not using the KIDS COUNT Data Center, you’re missing out on important information about the children and families in your community. The KIDS COUNT Data Center puts the power of data at [...]

How Does Kentucky Measure Up on Key Child Care Policies?

A new report examining statewide child care policies recognizes Kentucky as one of 31 states that has improved on key policies, yet finds that too many families nationwide are not receiving the help they need to thrive. The need for a better child care infrastructure to support working families is drawing attention from both presidential candidates, and there’s good reason. Simply put, child care helps children, families, and communities prosper. High quality child care gives [...]

Vote for Kids!

Your vote is your voice! In celebration of National Voter Registration Day, we encourage all Kentuckians of voting age to register. The November 8th ballot will include presidential candidates, as well as U.S. representatives and senators, Kentucky state representatives and senators, and U.S., state, and local judge seats. Children count on adults to speak up on their behalf. In fact, we've put together 5 reasons why Kentucky kids are depending on you to show up at your polling place [...]

The Ripple Effect and Child Poverty

You remember, don’t you? You’re that twelve-year old kid on a hot summer day. You and your friends are exploring that lake or pond or stream. And you pick up a handful of jagged rocks and toss them into the water. Almost magically it happens. That rock hits the surface, plunges in and then in its aftermath, those small waves emanate from the center and seemingly reach out forever. The ripple effect. Physicists have taken [...]

Improvements to the Child Care Assistance Program Go into Effect Today

Good news! Several family-friendly improvements that will increase access to child care go into effect September 1, 2016. 1. More families are now eligible for child care assistance. Thanks to Governor Bevin and the Kentucky General Assembly, income limits for child care assistance are increasing to 160 percent of the current federal poverty level, up from 150 percent of the 2011 federal poverty level. This means that a family of 4 making up to $38,880 will [...]

Kentucky Kids Need Your “WHYs?” and “WHAT IFs?”

This week, the New York Times featured an article from Warren Berger, the author of the wonderful book "A More Beautiful Question." Berger reminded organizations of the power of asking, “Why?” and “What If?” Two weeks ago you read about the data side of the recently released 2016 National Kids Count Data Book. This week I’d like to apply Berger’s interrogatives to that data. WHY does child poverty get ignored in the political chatter in Frankfort? And [...]

Proposal to Transform Kentucky’s Medicaid Program: Is It Good for Kids?

We at Kentucky Youth Advocates are asking, "Is it good for kids?" while trying to understand the proposal by the Bevin Administration to transform Kentucky's Medicaid program. From our perspective, we see some positives but also have some concerns. Children and pregnant women are protected from the potential negative impacts that premiums and reduced benefit packages could have, and we thank Governor Bevin for considering those vulnerable Kentuckians. But we are concerned with the impact [...]
