Guest Post: Connecting the Dots Between Oral Health and School Readiness

By Bill Buchanan Each year children arrive at school with a wide range of academic and developmental needs, skills, and abilities. This variability should be nurtured and valued as we help students transition into kindergarten, a starting point for academic success in elementary school and beyond. Understanding the connection between readiness and health can help us improve the outcomes for all of Kentucky’s young children. Kentucky Oral Health Coalition (KOHC) members recently discussed the connection [...]

Medicaid: Celebrating 50 Years of Healthier Kids

Medicaid is turning 50! Over the last five decades Medicaid has evolved and expanded into a prominent national program covering low-income individuals and families, individuals with disabilities, and the elderly population. Yet, Medicaid is holding fast to its roots of providing health coverage for low-income children. Currently 37% of all children in the United States receive coverage provided under Medicaid.  In Kentucky (as of 2012), nearly 48% of the Medicaid population are children, or about [...]

A Deeper Look at the National KIDS COUNT Data Book

On Tuesday, we co-released with the Annie E. Casey Foundation the national 2015 KIDS COUNT Data Book – considered by many to be the gold standard for measuring child well-being across the nation. Our press release highlights some of the Kentucky data found in the book, and you can view all of the Kentucky data, as well as information showing how each metric has changed since the start of the recession, in Kentucky’s state profile. [...]

Oral Health Matters for Pregnant Women

During pregnancy, women have many things to think about, but it’s also important for them to “think teeth.” The health of a woman’s teeth is actually linked to the health of her child. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has an excellent, free-to-order flyer that can be used by dental clinics, community health centers, WIC clinics, and other settings to educate women about protecting their teeth and gums. Education is crucial because four out [...]

New State Laws Protecting Children Take Effect This Week

Though it may feel like any other hot week of summer in Kentucky, this week will be the first that new laws enacted during the 2015 legislative session take effect. All legislation was effective on Wednesday, June 24th, unless the bill had a specific delayed implementation date. For Kentucky children, this means that new laws will now better protect them from abuse and neglect, promote strong child care options, and require safer travel by car. [...]

Opening the Doors to Meet the Needs of Children: Integrated Care Site Visit

This past week, my fellow Kentucky Youth Advocates team member Mahak Kalra and I had the opportunity to visit the University of Louisville Pediatrics Downtown location.  Far more than your typical pediatrician’s office, this location is an integrated health care clinic. Integrated care is a model that helps meet the health needs of our children by extending services beyond primary care. Two aspects of integrated care are particularly important for children: comprehensive care and co-location [...]

Save the Date: 12th Annual Children’s Advocacy Day on January 14, 2016

This year’s Children’s Advocacy Day at the Capitol was one of the largest yet, with over 700 children, youth, and adults attending to ask their leaders to put kids first in the legislative session. We know that Children’s Advocacy Day played an essential role in three key Blueprint for Kentucky’s Children wins for kids this year—and in numerous other wins in the previous 10 years. With your support and commitment, that momentum will continue in [...]

Keep Kentucky Babies’ Health from Going Up in Smoke

Healthy pregnancies lead to healthy babies. Yet a stubbornly high statistic—smoking during pregnancy—warns us that too many Kentucky babies don't get a strong start. The data by county also shows us that counties with comprehensive smoke-free laws have lower rates of smoking during pregnancy. That's an observation backed up by research that shows such laws work to reduce smoking during pregnancy and keep unborn babies safe. Such laws would also prevent many more pregnant women from breathing [...]
