More Than 1 in 4 Kentucky Children Live in Poverty

  More than 1 in 4 children in Kentucky are now living in poverty, according to new Census Bureau data from the American Community Survey, released today. Child poverty in Kentucky increased to 26.5 percent in 2012 from 25.6 percent in 2009, bringing the total number of children who live in poverty to 263,819. Significant changes are coming to the state health insurance system that will impact hundreds of thousands of children and families staring October 1. There are currently 640,000 uninsured Kentuckians, or 17.5 percent of the state’s population under age 65. About 332,000 of these uninsured individuals can gain coverage through the Health Benefit Exchange.
