In 2009, 10.1 million children and youth in the United States had been diagnosed with asthma at some point in their life. Asthma is the third-ranking cause of hospitalization among those younger than 15 years of age and one the leading causes of school absenteeism. As discussed in an earlier blog post, the current number and rate of Kentucky children experiencing inpatient hospitalizations due to asthma are lower than a decade ago. Source: American Lung [...]

Counting Kentucky’s Kids…Because They Count on Us!

As discussed in yesterday’s blog post, the Annie E. Casey Foundation just released their 23rd annual KIDS COUNT Data Book measuring the well-being of children in each state and nationwide. The index they used to evaluate child well-being is very different from the one they’ve been using for decades. So, what does this new, more comprehensive index of child well-being say on how Kentucky’s youngest folk are faring? There are some areas which are surprising, [...]

A 2011 Kentucky KIDS COUNT County Data Book Highlight: Smoking During Pregnancy

Children fare best when they have a healthy start in life, and this opportunity begins during pregnancy. But many healthy starts are compromised in Kentucky due to mothers smoking during pregnancy. During the 2007-2009 period, 25 percent of all births were to mothers who smoked at some point during pregnancy. Kentucky’s rate of smoking during pregnancy – the highest in the nation – is particularly troubling given the serious consequences on children’s health. The U.S. [...]

Data on child abuse and neglect cases in each county and the state as a whole for calendar year 2010 has been posted to the KIDS COUNT Data Center. This new data portrays some discouraging trends for vulnerable children in the Commonwealth, but as Kentuckians we can use our ingenuity to implement innovative solutions to prevent harm to children. New childhood mortality data has been posted to the KIDS COUNT Data Center for infants (less than one year old), children (ages 1-14) and teens (ages 15-19). Kentucky’s infant death rate has remained stable at 7 per 1,000 live births for approximately 15 years now, continuing to closely mirror the national rate. The state child death rate, however, has fallen over the past two decades, from 33 per 100,000 children ages 1-14 during 1990-1992 to [...]
