Statement by Terry Brooks, executive director of Kentucky Youth Advocates

We thank the Senate Judiciary Committee for passing SB 195, sponsored by Chairman Whitney Westerfield, to allow youth to expunge additional offenses. The expungement process would also be automatic in some cases, which helps young people who don’t have the resources or support to seek expungement. When kids get back on track, we must help them be prepared to succeed in the future as productive citizens. SB 195 seeks to allow additional youth records to be expunged to ensure youth who stay out of trouble are not held back from opportunities to learn, work, and contribute to their community.

We appreciate the work of Chairman Westerfield and the support of Senate Judiciary Committee members for making sure past mistakes don’t limit future successes for youth who stay on track.
