Shared-Use Agreements Lead to Healthier Communities

Shared-use agreements are a good way to improve community health and well-being by increasing families' access to recreational facilities. A shared-use agreement is a formal agreement between a school and a community agency for the use of facilities, such as gymnasiums, tracks, cafeterias, and athletic fields, during non-school hours. Schools can share spaces with the YMCA or city government, for example, with the benefit of shared costs and protection from liability. The Kentucky Cancer Consortium and Kentucky [...]

Wrapping up Children’s Dental Health Month

As February and Children’s Dental Health Month come to a close, we’re reminded that oral health needs to be a priority every month. Good oral health habits and regular visits to their dentist can give kids the strong start they need to have healthy teeth and gums going into adulthood. Pain from dental problems is a leading cause of school absences in Kentucky. Knowing this and that half of second graders in Kentucky are affected [...]

Oral Health Equity: How Does Data Play a Role?

Oral health disparities in Kentucky drive the work of the Kentucky Oral Health Coalition and its three workgroups. High cost of care, lack of prevention, and limited access to dental professionals remain among the top reasons Kentuckians historically have not maintained optimal oral health. But, how do we show the extent of disparities in the state? The answer is simple, yet can be complicated: data. In a recent webinar presented by the DentaQuest South/Southeast Regional [...]

New Data on Children’s Oral Health: How Do Kentucky Kids Fare?

Children’s oral health is a pressing issue in Kentucky. Oral health care is integral to overall health and wellness and affects a child’s success in learning and job prospects later in life. Understanding how Kentucky’s children, specifically those on Medicaid, fare in their oral health can help build the case for increased access to oral health care services and education. Kynect Open Enrollment and Dental Coverage in Kentucky

Kynect, Kentucky’s health benefit exchange, began its second annual open enrollment period on November 15 and will run through February 15, 2015. Complete Streets: Field Trip to Norton Commons

Marsha Bach of the Northern Kentucky Health Department and Mayor Rick Skinner of Williamstown discuss Complete Streets while touring Norton Commons. Growing up I played outside with neighborhood children from sunrise to sunset. We’d ride our bicycles around the block and take walks to the neighborhood pool and park. I remember the sense of safety and connection I felt because I was able to easily navigate my community by bike or foot. I, [...]

Better Data Needed to Track Status of Children’s Oral Health in Kentucky

According to the Governor’s Ky Health Now Initiative, Kentucky ranks 45th in the percentage of children with untreated dental decay (34.6%). The Pew Center on States gave Kentucky a “C” grade in providing oral health care to children in their latest report. Yet, it’s difficult to truly know where Kentucky stands on children’s oral health since the state has not systematically collected data on children’s oral health in over a decade. In 2008, Kentucky passed [...]

Synergy: The Interaction of KOHC and KDA to Improve the Overall Oral Health of Kentuckians

The Kentucky Oral Health Coalition (KOHC) was recently featured in the July/August 2014 issue of Kentucky Dental Association’s (KDA) magazine, KDA Today.  The article, written by KOHC’s own Lacey McNary, focused on the increasing awareness of Kentucky’s oral health needs and the growing energy of stakeholders across the Commonwealth. Governor Steve Beshear’s KyHealthNow goals for improving oral health for Kentuckians and the priorities of KDA and KOHC align—specifically improving oral health awareness, expanding school-based oral health services, and increasing [...]
