Historically, decisions about programs, policies, and services have been made without the input of those proximate to the issues or receiving end.

Today, we know better. And we’re doing better.

Through an effort to build the voices of those with child welfare lived experience – to hear and learn from those who have been there – Kentucky Youth Advocates, with the support of Casey Family Programs, partnered with formerly systems-involved individuals to conduct focus groups and interviews with others who are currently or formerly-involved as well.

Some of what we heard was a need for improved communication, for support and connection, and for both concrete and economic resources.

But we’re doing more than just listening. We’re using the findings to give back to future individuals including birth mothers and fathers, foster parents, foster youth, and relative and fictive caregivers, entering the child welfare system. So no one has to navigate their way alone.

We’re excited to launch a new website that combines in one place what Kentucky youth, parents, and caregivers need to find their way, get what they need, and join others who have been or are in their shoes. Together, we’re walking toward a more transparent and informed experience and better partnerships between individuals and the systems so that we can focus on what’s most important – safe children and thriving families.
