business team standingThe term “young invincible” has been in the news a lot recently. What is a “young invincible”?

A “young invincible” is a person between the ages of 19 and 34. This age group is particularly important in the context of health insurance. As insurance marketplaces, either state or federally-run, are getting up and running throughout the country, a distribution of all age groups is important for these marketplaces to succeed. The young invincibles are especially important because they are often healthier and have lower health care costs, so they balance out the overall insurance costs with individuals who have higher health care costs, such as older adults or those who experience more health problems. The Kaiser Foundation has additional information about this here.

Thanks to the efforts of kynect and Get Covered Kentucky, Kentucky is doing pretty well enrolling “young invincibles.” According to recent data from kynect, 31 percent of those enrolled are between the ages of 18 and 34. This is a good start, but Kentucky still has ground to improve enrollment of this age group. Open enrollment is underway so spread the word and help the “young invincible” and all others enroll as soon as possible.
