Happy New Year! Welcome back to many of you who took time off for holidays and vacations.

Beginning a new year often means making (and breaking) resolutions. The 2013 Blueprint for Kentucky’s Children outlines nine policy priorities that can serve as resolutions for improving the lives of kids throughout Kentucky. Take a look at the list of priorities – and when making your own resolutions this year, consider how you can make a difference in the lives of Kentucky children. Here are some ideas:

  • Believe that you can make a different in the lives of children.
  • Resolve to attend Children’s Advocacy Day at the Capitol on February 7.
  • Sign up for Kentucky Youth Advocates’ list serve to stay updated on news and events affecting Kentucky’s kids, and like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter. If you are already signed-up, please share our news and alerts with your friends, family and colleagues!
  • Commit to acting whenever you see an Action Alert that requires you to make your voice heard on issues affecting children.
  • Make sure you are registered to vote – 2013 is not an election year but it is a good time to make sure you are registered.
  • Know about your government:  know your own local, state, and national representatives.
  • Know your issues well – especially Blueprint issues – and relate that issue by calling, writing letters, and visiting your elected officials
  • Tell your story to your local newspaper.  Make sure your information is accurate and specific.  Give your contact information in case there is a need for follow-up.
  • Educate and involve others in your cause by talking to your neighbors and friends or writing a letter to the editor of your local newspaper.
  • Never give up.

Have a happy and healthy 2013.
