May is National Foster Care Month, but it’s only fitting to recognize the grandparents and other relatives who are raising children in Kentucky. Kinship care is often a safe alternative to foster care for children who cannot remain safely with their parents, as research shows that they are better off with family. We also know that kinship care poses lots of financial, emotional, and legal challenges for caregivers. All children deserve a safe and nurturing place to grow up, and to help make that possible for kids living with their relatives, kinship caregivers need better supports.

The Kinship Families Coalition of Kentucky, which is coordinated by Kentucky Youth Advocates, distributes an infographic that shares facts about kinship care in our state. The graphic also displays the inequity in supports for kinship care compared to foster care and offers some suggestions on how we can better leverage the strengths of kinship families to ensure they are thriving.
